This is a place to talk about writing and reading fiction (including novels, short stories, film, and other media) that critiques society, either by offering up a better or more ideal alternative (utopia) or by extrapolating the butterfly effect with regard to sociocultural or political trends to their most extreme potential outcome (dystopia). Many of these stories and books lend well to science fiction and speculative fiction premises, but it is important to note that most science fiction is not dystopian fiction, and there's plenty of dystopian fiction that isn't science fiction.

Some of our great works of literature stem from this tradition, including such works as 1984,Brave New World, and The Handmaid's Tale, to name just a few.

Personally, I'd also like to explore the potential for dystopian critique of our world in a nonfictional way.
